Minimally invasive, ultrasound (US)-guided thyroid treatment modalities are becoming effective and safe alternatives to surgery in patients with benign thyroid cysts, solid nonfunctioning benign thyroid nodules that grow or become symptomatic, and in solid hyper-functioning nodules. In addition, they may also have an effective complementary role in the management of primary micropapillary tumors or recurrent thyroid cancers.

These procedures include the use of chemical agents such as Ethanol Ablation (EA), or thermal thyroid tissue destruction through Laser Ablation (LA), Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), Microwave Ablation (MWA) and High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU). Current claims are that EA, RFA, MWA and HIFU show comparable results. However this item is still debated, and different minimally invasive approaches may have distinct indications and outcomes.

At this meeting, the first session gave a framework of thyroid nodule issues, whereas in the following sessions first-class experts chaired outstanding speakers who presented the state of-the-art of all ultrasound-guided thyroid minimally invasive procedures.

Hands-on practice have also been available on Saturday afternoon, November 16, 2019, for those participants who want to try thermal ablation devices on their own.
