Ms M.R., Italy: Large goiter with a big nodule treated by Laser.

Hi, I am a 52-year-old woman living in Padua, Italy. I wanted to tell the medical story about my thyroid. At the age of 16, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism with a large goiter and a nodule about 2 cm long.

I followed a Eutirox treatment for about a year, after which the thyroid began to function normally.

However, since the birth of my two children, the nodules doubled in both volume and quantity. Several visits and checks followed by some medical endocrinologists of Padua, who advised me to resist as long as I could, even if I had problems breathing and swallowing. When the situation became unsustainable, the only action that remained would have been the total removal of the thyroid and the taking in life of medicines such as replacement thyroxine.

One day, in 2006, while I was watching a medical television program, I heard a doctor, who was illustrating his innovative method on thyroid nodules through percutaneous echo-guided laser ablation: I remained enthusiastic because it gave me hope about a possible recovery without having to remove a thyroid that was still working.

The next day, I called his secretary and made an appointment for a visit.

At our first meeting, the Doctor was immediately frank with me telling me that it would be a great challenge, given the size of the goiter, which by now had reached the volume of an orange.

It would take at least 4 laser operations to reduce it.

In the following years, I was subjected to 4 operations over the course of 4 years which considerably reduced my nodules, significantly improving my state of health.

I breathe better and I have no more problems swallowing, but above all, I still have my thyroid that works without the use of drugs.

Every year I undergo blood tests and ultrasound examinations and the results are positive.
